Along the way, I operated a Graphics Lab that was half Windows NT workstations and half Apple Mac OS 9 computers. Soon after the Apple II days, I spent time on a Sperry Univac before finally settling into MS-DOS on an IBM and then an HP this lead to Windows 3.1, 95, 98, NT, (not) ME, 2000, XP, and the oh-so-not-ready for primetime Vista. Ever since, we have been striving for the perfect computing experience where it is about the creative work or otherwise being done, not the work being done to keep the computer happy. I will wait a couple of weeks before doing the upgrade to v5 - the cost for a boxed set, with shipping and taxes is almost 60 dollars US, so I will probably buy the upgrade through Apple Canada or Amazon.ca instead of from Parallels itself. When a USB flash drive or a DVD is inserted, XP aggressively captures the media and it cannot be 'seen' under the Mac OS unless you shut down Parallels.

Version 5 claims to have improved performance in this area. Improvements that I would like to see - videos are jerky when running PPT and showing a video during a presentation under the VM (I now just open under the XP partition with Bootcamp instead of using Parallels). Once Kapersky has finished its business (usually after a couple of minutes) everything is back to normal. Occasionally, the entire system will slow down, this seems to be related to the Kapersky security software running under XP. I usually have 4 to 6 applications running on my Mac and 3 to 4 applications running also on my VM. I have 4Gb on my MacBook - 2 Gb allocated to Max OS and 2 Gb allocated to Parallels and Windows. I have now been using this software, on a daily basis, for over a year (I have some favourite 'personal productivity' applications that I am reluctant to abandon as their equivalents do not exist in the Mac world - I also continue to use my accounting software in Windows). My Windows needs are very slim, so I need something that just works: and Parallels just doesn't do it for me. Now after 7 months, I'm at the point of washing my hands of it and going over to VMware Fusion. All well for a couple of more months, now it refuses to open up any software and doesn't recognize the wireless remote. I had to end up taking Parallels off the entire system and then re-installing it, fresh.

BTW, they do offer telephone support but you don't want to know the cost. I directed my complaints to the Parallels Support-email. After several frustrating days of constantly hitting the 'reset' arrow. Then the virtual system for no apparent reason would start to drag. I installed it and after installing Windows XP Home, no problem for several weeks. It was one of the first softwares I bought for my new MacBook Pro for the express intent of bringing some of my Windows only applications to my laptop and to have access to Internet Explorer- which, I know, is near the bottom of the barrel, but many secured sites will only give access to IE. All you have to do is install Windows on Bootcamp. There is no need to buy Parallels (or any Virtual software) if you're only going to use Apple's proprietary system Bootcamp. Just go to (US) and look at the reviews of people who've actually bought Parallels 4.0. Parallels 4.0- still many, many problems. The reviewer after me suggests that I'm using an older version and so the problem is a non-issue for Parallels 4.0.
